Front cover, L’Officel magazine, October 1959.

Earlier this year, I swore to myself that I would refrain from buying any more pieces for the time being. I’ve always subscribed to the idea of quality over quantity; I’ve never wished for my collection to become any larger than necessary. Finances, space and sheer sentimentality limits me to only purchasing the pieces I just can’t do without. So it was with this that I decided to abstain from any further additions.

That is until this coat came along.

Created for Givenchy’s Autumn/Winter 1959 collection, this design had always been on my radar. It was one of the more highly publicised pieces from this particular season, featuring on the cover of L’Officiel magazine, sketched in Vogue, photographed by Seeberger, and even copied in America by the department store Macy’s for $129 (nearly $1,500 today). So when the opportunity to purchase it came along, my hands were essentially tied - what choice did I have?
